The Story Behind the Build Africa Credit Scheme (BACS)

“A lot of property developers and contractors just need enough funding to fulfil their construction obligations leading to the next payment milestone. And when we look under the hood of finance requirements, the biggest portion is needed to procure building materials.” – Tayo Odunsi, Founder & CEO, Build Africa
This insight wasn’t just a passing observation; it became the foundation for a bold new strategy for Build Africa.
Two years ago, Build Africa launched with a mission to make building materials more accessible and transparent. We started by solving price discovery and procurement bottlenecks. But as we listened to builders across Nigeria, one truth kept surfacing: access to materials is often blocked by access to credit.
That’s where the idea for the Build Africa Credit Scheme (BACS) was born.

To bring this vision to life, we partnered with Oze, a fintech platform known for enabling digital lending across Africa. Oze’s data-driven lending model was the perfect match for Build Africa’s trusted supply chain.
“Our goal is to make credit accessible to builders who are often overlooked by traditional lenders,” said Meghan McCormick, Co-Founder of Oze. “This partnership brings together Oze’s lending technology and Build Africa’s deep understanding of the construction ecosystem to deliver real impact.”
Together, we created a ₦2 Billion annual credit scheme that allows builders to access Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) options directly on BuildAfrica.store, with approvals in under 24 hours, no collateral required.
To mark this milestone, we’re hosting a special virtual event, a conversation about the future of construction finance in Nigeria.
